How creditors choose a path

Keep, place, or sell. A first slice beats a noisy whole book.

Charge-off is an accounting event. What you do next is an operating choice: keep working it, place it, or sell it. DebtHub exists for the third option when you want a qualified buyer and a documented close.

Keep in-house

Makes sense when you have licensed staff, a working dialer/CRM, and the vintage still pays. Cost sits on your P&L. Reputation risk stays yours.

Place with an agency

You keep ownership. The agency works for a fee. Easy to start, easy to pause, and you still own disputes and recalls. Placement is not a sale.

Sell to a qualified buyer

You transfer title under a PSA, take a bid, and (if the contract says so) a 90-day warranty. That is the DebtHub path. Pair with selling debt to an agency vs a marketplace if you are weighing placement against sale.

Three liquidity paths after charge-off
Path Cash Control after day 30 Best fit
In-house Slow, as accounts pay Full Fresh vintage, licensed staff
Placement Fee share over time You still own it You want optionality
Sale Lump sum at close Buyer owns it You want the paper off the books

Questions this page answers

Does a sale wipe consumer complaints overnight?

No. Residual contact happens in the cut-off window. A clean board and a named buyer compliance owner reduce it. We do not handle consumer “stop calling” requests on this site.

Can we sell only a slice of the book?

Yes. Vintage, state, or balance-tier slices are ordinary first sales.

Is placement cheaper than a sale process?

Placement is cheaper to start. A competitive sale usually recovers more cash on a complete file. Thin files should stay in placement or in-house.
