How buyers read a tape

NDA first. Then a working file. Bid with a unit.

Buyers do not receive a public spreadsheet of consumers. Qualification happens first. That protects sellers and keeps files inside a network that can actually board the paper.

What we ask for

  • Entity, principals, and operating jurisdictions.
  • That the business entity is operational, with a reputation sellers will accept. RMAI or ACA membership is a plus, not required.
  • E&O and cyber insurance certificates with limits that match the file size you want.
  • Data security: where tapes live, who can access them, retention, and destruction if you lose the bid.
  • Buying box: asset classes, face, vintage, monthly capacity, collect vs litigate mix.
  • Capital: ability to fund a close in the window the PSA states.

What fails qualification

Shops that cannot show an operating entity or a reputation sellers will accept, consumer-facing lead buyers, and shops that cannot show insurance or a named compliance owner. We also decline buyers who will not sign the mutual NDA.

A national box still needs a geography you can actually work. Name the states you will bid so the desk does not send you a mix you will pass.

After you clear

You enter the match pool. When a tape fits your criteria, you get a redacted view under NDA, then a fuller file if you bid. Nothing is exclusive unless the seller asked for a closed auction.

Pair this page with the public how to buy a debt portfolio guide. Qualification is the gate; the guide is the underwriting manual.

Qualification file, in practice
Document Why it matters Common miss
Operating entity Sellers want an operating company they can name Shelf company or no public track record
E&O / cyber certs Data tapes are consumer files Expired certificates
Buying box Stops wasted NDAs on paper you will never bid “We buy everything”
Funding proof Close calendar is 14–45 days, not “when capital arrives” No named wiring party
